Yaquina Bay, at the town of Newport, is one of the more productive sites on the Oregon coast. On this visit, high winds reduced the number of birds that were out and about, but there was still a lot to see.

John, are loons migratory? We’ve been along the Coast more often this year and I haven’t managed to spot any. Any tips?
Jane
Jane, All of the loons nest north of Oregon, migrating south in autumn. Several species are easy to spot along the coast through spring. They fly past many of the “seawatch” sites in great numbers, and you can usually see a few in any bay along the coast.
