Jackson Bottom Wetland

Birding at Jackson Bottom Wetland in Hillsboro can be hit or miss. But even when it’s quiet, there is always something to see. During my last visit there were several large sunflowers that had gone to seed, and the Black-capped Chickadees were loving it.

I don’t think I have ever seen so many Brush Rabbits in one spot. I saw at least a dozen on this trip.

I don’t often see Black-tailed Deer here, either, so this cooperative doe was a nice treat.

Bushtits are notoriously flighty, never sitting still for long, so I was delighted when this female paused for a moment in good light.

Nothing rare or extraordinary this trip, but this is the goal; enjoying the wildlife that lives where you are. If your goal is finding a rarity, you will be disappointed most of the time. Get out as often as you can. Enjoy and scrutinize every creature you see. Rarities are found by combing through all the common stuff.
